When Larry Schuberg passed away yesterday, our community lost more than just a familiar face. We lost a hometown hero - a big brother, a rock for friends and families in need, and a coach who defined what it meant to be part of a team. Larry's sudden passing leaves a Larry-sized hole in all our hearts.
Larry Was Family To Us All
To me, Larry was like the big brother I never had. Even when we were kids, he had a special talent for making everyone feel welcome and cared for. Larry radiated warmth - whether he was cracking jokes at Sunday dinner or selflessly rearranging his schedule to cheer you on at an away game. Family came first for Larry, but his definition of "family" stretched way beyond blood ties.
Over the years, I was lucky enough to coach local football and baseball alongside Larry. Without fail, he forged close bonds between our players and parents, uniting everyone with his inclusive, team-focused spirit. Practices and games were joyful under Larry's leadership. His sportsmanship and care for each individual player modeled invaluable life lessons for our kids about community, effort, and integrity.
We'll Never Forget Larry's Athletic Prowess
As both a friend and fan, I also idolized Larry for his jaw-dropping talent on the football field. Watching him absolutely truck opponents as Big Rapids High School's star running back is permanently etched into my sports memories. Larry charged forward with such speed, power, and determination every game.
In my completely biased opinion, Larry may well have been the single greatest running back our hometown has ever seen. Even now, decades later and with Larry playing for a bigger team upstairs, his enduring athletic legend still brings a smile when those glory days come up in conversation.
His Legacy Will Play On
Of course, Larry leaves behind so much more than sports stories. His wife, two sons, and everyone else whose lives he touched now face their days without his uplifting presence. The loss hits hard, but even grief reminds us of Larry's wonderful mark on this community.
In the sadness since his passing, the immense scope of Larry's legacy shines through. From coaching to selfless acts of service to unwavering support as a friend - the role Larry played keeps growing clearer. He set an example of seizing each day as a gift and spreading love generously to everyone around him.
There is comfort knowing Larry packed more meaningful living into his years than most do in a century. The outpouring of community grieving proves just how many people called this very special person not just a friend, but family too.
Larry, you are already so missed - but your spirit lives large in all of us lucky to be touched by your light. Thank you sincerely for every laugh, lesson, and memory over the years. Big Rapids won't be the same without our hometown hero, but we promise to pay your legacy forward. Rest easy, Big Guy - this community will take it from here.
